In the context of this web presence creation, I decided to address a topic of my interest which is poetry, or more widely “The Beauty of Words”, can it be in poems or songs. This brief exegesis outlines the choices I made in a matter of my central and contributing nodes and why I made these choices. More precisely, I explain the choice of the four Web 2.0 platforms I decided to use, as well as the choice of the different layouts and how did I managed to create un link between all these platforms.
First of all, I decided that the central node of my web presence would be a website and I used a free and user-friendly site to create it. This choice of platform was not hard to make as I perceive websites as professional and complete tools that easily allow adding internal as well as external links. Then, using a website as my central node seems more official to me whereas a blog or a wiki will seem more casual. Regarding the layout of my website, I wanted a quite simple template with pure colours so as to reflect the timeless world of poetry. Then, for the header I chose in the suggested images a picture of the Earth seen from above as I think it well reflects the idea that poetry is not facing the boundaries of space but rather it travel around freely just as the air. In order to keep a flow between the central nodes and the contributing nodes I tried to keep a consistency regarding the templates when it was possible, so as to always convey this same idea of purity and neutrality. I really think the theme I chose does not require fancy colours and format as the focus is on the words and not on insignificant details.
Secondly, I decided that the first contributing node of my web presence would be a group on Facebook. I chose this Web 2.0 platform because it is the most famous social network nowadays and as I am already a member it was easier for me to use the tools available. Facebook groups are very easy to create and manage but the only disadvantage would be the impossibility to change the template. Therefore, there was no real choice to make regarding the template of this group called “Jeff Buckley: A man touched by the Grace”. Rather, I chose a picture that according to me is full of grace and poesy, reflecting the overall theme of my web presence. Then, besides the portrait of Jeff Buckley that recalls the theme of the web presence, the content itself strongly links this contributing node to the central one. In fact, the group focuses on the artist Jeff Buckley that was besides a singer, a real poet touched by the grace. The link between this node and the central node is the beauty of words and how a specific artist was exceling in it.
Thirdly, I decided that the second contributing node of my web presence would be a blog and I will be using this platform to post my own work online. I decided to use a blog because it can be used as an online diary and this facet of the platform well matches the fact that I want to post my personal work on it. Then, blogs are considered as one of the most important platform in term of popularity during the last decade that would make my blog part of this great phenomenon. Regarding the layout of my blog, I chose to stay quite neutral, opting for a dark grey theme that well matches with the template of the central node and I didn’t had any fancy details to be sure to stay consistent with the overall web presence. Using a blog as a way to post my work will allow people to post comments maybe about what they think of the texts I wrote and consequently I could take these feedbacks into consideration or not. Blogs are all about participatory culture but the creator of the blog stay the only manager and even if blogs allow people to participate, they gave the ultimate right and the last word to the creator.
Finally, I wanted my third nodes to be a wiki and I used this platform in order to be able to talk about three songs that are according to me the most beautiful songs of the 20th century. I chose this platform, which is a Web 2.0 platform, because I think it is a very interesting tool available online that allows people to contribute to the global knowledge and to self-control whatever is being said on this platform. Regarding the layout of my wiki, I decided to use a dark grey theme so as to suit the rest of my web presence creation and here again the design stays very classic and neutral. Then, besides the general template that recalls the theme of the web presence, the content itself strongly links this contributing node to the central one. In fact, the wiki focuses on the three most beautiful songs of the 20th century and consequently meet the overall theme of the web presence creation which is poetry and the beauty of words.
To conclude, my web presence creation is constituted of one central node which is present in the form of a website and then the three contributing nodes are present in the form of a Facebook group, a blog and a wiki respectively. All these Web 2.0 tools have been chosen according to the possibilities they offer and the importance they have on the World Wide Web nowadays. The web presence itself proves to be consistent as the different nodes are similar according to their layout and templates and the content available in the different nodes also plays an important role in linking the four platforms around a same theme of discussion.
